What are they made from?
The straws are made from 304 food grade stainless steel.
The wire brush is made from a stainless-steel wire handle with a nylon bristle tip. Darn it, sneaky plastic! Although the bristles of the brush are nylon, it encourages people to reuse these straws again and again, hopefully keeping the hundreds or even thousands of straws you would have used otherwise out of our environment! I’m gonna say this is a forgivable use of plastic for now.
Where do they come from?
…I currently have no info on where these straws are made, I’ve asked so I’ll get back to you on that. The steel is probably from India or China but I could be wrong.
Are they sustainable?
Stainless steel is much harder wearing than plastic, so can stay in use for much longer. Once it is no longer usable or just unused, it can be recycled again and again. It is a much more sustainable material than plastic in this sense. It does take more energy to make, but its reuse rate in comparison to plastic makes the end of life for stainless steel much more environmentally friendly.
How about ethical?
Eco-straws provide no info on its ethics other than its eco-credentials. I’m asking the question so just hang on for an answer.
Extra good stuff:
Eco-Straws donate 1p from every straw sold to Sea Shepherd, an organisation whose main aim is ocean conservation.
The straws come packaged in 100% recycled and biodegradable cardboard.
Conclusion –
The wire cleaning brush may contain some plastic, but if it helps us eradicate the scourge that is plastic straws, we’ll just have to suck it up for now. So slurp to your hearts content with these reusable and environmentally friendly straws!
